Revitalizing English Language Teaching in India: Integrating Role-Play and Technology for Enhanced Communicative Skills
Abstract
In India, the emphasis of language teaching is mostly on the acquisition of the language rather than the instructional methods used. The focus is solely on the language proficiency of the language learner, disregarding the development of the student's communicative skills. The lack of a conducive setting, inadequate utilisation of effective teaching tools and methods, and the unawareness of recent advancements in English language instruction among educators worsen the state of English language teaching and learning in India. Role-play is an effective instructional and training method in which learners assume various roles, embodying a specific character or personality, and engage in interactions and activities within diverse and intricate learning environments. This study primarily concentrates on the effective application and optimal utilisation of technology in the English language education classroom. The success of the English language teacher depends on several key factors. Firstly, the chosen topic should be authentic and applicable to the current situation. Secondly, the teacher should fulfil the roles of facilitator, participant, and observer. Thirdly, it is crucial to provide appropriate feedback, correct errors, and foster the development of language competence and self-confidence. This article discusses the primary advantages of role-play, its use in a language classroom, the process of creating a role-play, preparing students for role-play, and the teacher's involvement in facilitating role-play activities.
